Happy Healthy Counselling, supporting change

    about me

    My Biography

Stephen Quinlan started his Private Counselling Practice to support people looking to make changes in their lives to be happier. Steve has practised as an Alcohol and Drug Counsellor since 2017 and works with the person to identify what needs to change and work out how to make those changes. Steve uses a trauma informed strength based approach and often has humour in the sessions that makes the hard work more enjoyable.

In September 2015 Steve was awarded the Inspiring Social Worker of the Year by The University of British Columbia Social Work Department and the British Columbia College of Social Workers for his work as a Director for PLEA Community Services on Quality Improvement for the agency and for a database system that was designed to support service improvements. Although CAMS (Case Administration Management System) started as an in-house system, it was being used by over 20 agencies by the time Steve was given the award. CAMS was named after his son, Cameron.

As a Registered Social Worker during his time at PLEA Steve approved 100’s of Specialized Foster Homes assessments.  He also managed a team that supported specialised foster homes and the youth in them. In 2017 Steve was asked to serve as a Subject Matter Expert on the Passing Score Committee to set minimum standards for the Professional Registration Exam for The Association of Social Worker Board of North America. Steve has many interests and is a very active member in his home community of Maple Ridge.  Steve served on the Board of the FASD SOciety of BC (Asnate Centre) from 2017 to 2023 and in his last year was the Board Co-Chair. Steve sits on two Community Committees in Maple Ridge, Pride Picnic in the Park and the Truth and Reconciliation Community Event that is led by Katzie First Nations. Steve also works for the City of Maple Ridge as a Recreation Host and as a member of a team that hosts large and small community events from Canada Day and Remembrance Day to small community events in local parks.  Steve is the longest serving Recreation host on the team. Steve has also volunteered since 2012 for Operation Red Nose (COVID has limited its ability to operate for a couple of the years). The service provides friendly and reliable service for people unfit to drink throughout December. Steve has worked in Federal, Provincial and Municipal Elections as various Elections officer roles and has been appointed the District Electoral Officer for the District of Maple Ridge East in the next Provincial election currently set for October 2024.  There will be a 10 week period during this time where he will be working exclusively full time for Elections BC. And one thing you are unlikely to know about Steve is he is a Guinness World Record holder for “The Fastest time to Travel to all Skytrain Stations in 2 hours 49 minutes and 37.69 seconds on “May the Fourth” 2018 and raised over $1,250 for Alouette Addictions Services.
